Admission Requirements & Fees

There are no previous education or age requirements for our film program. Anyone with the willingness to learn about filmmaking can enroll in our program.

The course enrollment fee is just $299 (USD) and that includes everything you need to get started.

Our Program

The Film program at Lights Film School focuses on both the practical and theoretical elements of filmmaking. We believe in the concept of "outcomes based learning" which is a multidisciplinary method to teaching which focuses on the desires of the students. While there is a curriculum, the course is largely project based which means you get to choose the areas that interest you most and gear each one of your projects towards your individual interests within film.

Students are introduced to subjects ranging from developing ideas, producing, directing and marketing films. We walk you through the process from idea conceptualization all the way to distribution and everything in between. Through each of our lessons our students will have the opportunity to work hands-on with raw film footage provided by us to create movies and videos.

Since our program is project based, students will be required to create their own scripts, short movies and learn to implement visually stunning cinematic elements into their productions.

Students will gain first hand experience in every facet of filmmaking from storyboarding and concept building to casting, camera work and editing. Our course is very hands-on and will require that our students have their own camera and computer. Other than that we will provide the rest.

Students will gain relevant industry knowledge through practical work experience and readings. After course completion many of our students get into independent filmmaking. However others get into directing, producing, creative direction, set design and film marketing.

Career Prospects

The filmmaking program has generated a varied and adaptable workforce. Graduates have been employed by filmmaking companies, production companies, set designers, directors, photography directors (DOP's) and many of our students continue on to get into independent filmmaking.

Maya Gardel - Graduated 2007

"I enrolled in Lights Film School this year because I really wanted to learn how to create a movie. I purchased a camera earlier in the year with the intention on making movies, but soon realized that I was in over my head. I had problems editing, my camera work was unprofessional and my stories needed some serious attention. I decided to enroll in the Lights Film Course because it was a comprehensive course that would teach me how to refine my script, shoot impressive footage and edit it
professionally.

After finishing the film course, myself and a small team of journalists, photographers and filmmakers traveled to South America where we just finished capturing some of the most breathtaking, spectacular footage I've ever seen.

As I am now in post production, I am finally happy with my ability to sit behind the computer and edit my footage with great care and professionalism.

I'm hoping for my film to be in festivals and on DVD next year!"

Courses

1. INTRODUCTION TO FILMMAKING & ONLINE LEARNING
Student introductions / Film basics / Introduction to your online learning environment

2. SCREENWRITING
This module was designed for those interested in both fiction film and documentary filmmaking. While it's true that a strong clinical analysis of a script isn't a definite way to ensure the success of a story, it is true that understanding the mathematics of story design helps you improve your story telling abilities. You'll learn about Western Dramatic Structure, character archetypes, building & releasing tension, writing for small budget productions, balancing action & dialogue & how to creatively and effectively write compelling scenes.

ASSIGNMENT: Write the first 15 pages of a feature length script (up until the inciting incident) and submit it for analysis and review.

3. DIRECTING
Directors need to know many things: How to run a set, how to harness their imagination as a story telling tool, how to create strong moments, how to ensure their film or documentary communicates clearly, how to fit the individual shots of a scene together, how to work with actors, how to strategically use language as a tool when communicating your vision, how to conceptualize designs and how to communicate with the Director of Photography (DOP) to name only a few of the countless things a Director needs to consider when shooting a film. As the Director you're the captain of the ship and much of the responsibility for the film's success falls on your shoulders.

A Director needs to have clarity on the overall vision for a film. Everything from performance, acting beats, color, staging, lens choice, lighting, depth, set design, makeup, atmosphere, pacing & wardrobe need to be considered when a director is working towards seeing their overall vision for a story come to fruition.

This module is helpful to both fiction and documentary filmmakers looking to refine their own visualization, story analysis & directorial skills.

ASSIGNMENT: At the end of this module you'll be asked to write an essay on the work of some of the world's best filmmakers (fiction filmmakers will study fiction directors, and those interested in documentary films will study documentary directors). You'll also be given film recommendations and you'll be asked to study at least three critically acclaimed directors. This process of studying and deconstructing the films of the masters is a great way for our students to see practical applications of the theories discussed in our lecture notes.

4. CINEMATOGRAPHY
In this module you'll learn about the 3 main components of cinematography: Lighting, movement & composition. You'll will study shapes, lines, color theory color psychology, framing heights, shot types, the line of action, continuity and shot flow as well as exploring temporal & spatial connections.

Cinematography just like writing requires an acute awareness of punctuation. This module requires that you study the work of the visual masters while at the same time developing a visual vocabulary that is all your own. You'll also learn about creative composition techniques to help you design visually powerful films and documentaries to add to your portfolio of work.

ASSIGNMENT: Your cinematography assignment is your first visual assignment (out of 4 in total). This assignment (entitled "build 1" will be 3-5 minutes in length and will focus primarily on composition & lighting. Each of your visual assignments will "build" on your previous skills acquired while allowing you to focus on 1 visual or design element at a time. This allows to you get deeply familiar with 1 particular component of the film design process at a time rather than being overwhelmed with the complexity of the entire filmmaking process all at once.

5. SOUND DESIGN
Sound design is undoubtedly one of the biggest contributing factors to a high perceived production value. Understanding sound is imperative if you want to avoid the airy, light, "hissy" sound that is often associated with independent film productions.

In this lecture we'll discuss synchronization, wavelengths, bit depth, sample rates, stereo vs. mono, microphones, room tone, recording space, sound editing, compression and noise reduction.

As a Lights Film School student you'll also get access to our Stock Music Library where you can download thousands of dollars worth of stock music for use in your student projects at no cost. We have negotiated the rights for you to be able to use the music in your non-commercial student productions. Best of all you can upload your videos online and submit your films to festivals without having to pay royalties to a composer or worry about the legality of the music you're using in your films or documentaries.

ASSIGNMENT: This assignment (entitled "build 2") is your second visual assignment which will allow you to build on top of your previous knowledge by not only focusing on the elements of your visual design, but also by incorporating a well conceived sound-mix into your production. You will be working with sound FX, ambient sound, foley sound, music and dialogue. Again, this assignment will be 3-5 minutes in length.

6. EDITING
In the editing module you'll learn about editing software, capturing, title sequences, rough cuts, in and out points, 3 point editing. splice edits, overlays, fades, dissolves and color correction

ASSIGNMENT: This assignment (entitled "build 3") will carry forward both the visual design elements discussed in the module on cinematography and the sound design lessons learnt in the module on sound. However, this time your focus will be on creating a film with such a strong sense of continuity so that each shot flows into the next one with graceful framing, coloring and editing continuity.

7. DOCUMENTARY
The documentary module is built specifically for documentary filmmakers, but it also gives fiction filmmakers the opportunity to apply their newfound knowledge about filmmaking, story and design into a non-fiction context. In this module you'll learn how to direct and produce a documentary. You'll learn how to write loglines, treatments & proposals as well as explore topics ranging from documentary post production, labelling & organization as well as how to plan and light an interview.

ASSIGNMENT: This is your last visual assignment. Both fiction filmmakers and documentary filmmakers are asked to complete this assignment to different specifications to take into consideration their different interests. However this assignment is focused on using natural environments and natural lighting in a way that not only helps you tell your story, but also incorporates all previous teachings to achieve the highest production value possible.
